Now let's move on into the content.
Welcome back. We are moving on with the story of Crispin, the Cross of Lead, and summarizing the chapters. We are doing our short episodes for this. So once again, we have six more chapters. Today, we have chapters 13 through 18, and all of these look pretty short, so this is definitely going to be a very quick episode.
Let's go ahead and dive in.
Chapter 13.
Crispin was woken up by horse hooves galloping. It was John Ayecliffe and the man Crispin saw him with in the woods. They didn't see Crispin and passed by him. Crispin checked the leather pouch. It had three seeds and his cross. He tossed the three seeds and returned the cross to the pouch.
For the next two days Crispin didn't know what to do. He couldn't go back to [00:02:00] Stromford, but he was afraid of going to any town or city. So we wandered aimlessly through the forest.
On the second day, he saw the bailiff ahead. It reminded him that his mission was to get far from Stromford, so we got back on the road. By the end of the day, Crispin was so worn that he prayed to Jesus to take him.
That is the end of chapter 13.
Onto chapter 14.
When Crispin woke up the third morning, he was surrounded by fog. Even blocking out the sun. As Crispin traveled the road, he saw a man hanging from a gallows. He was dead. He had been dead for a while and was rather gross. Crispin knelt and prayed and thought maybe he was dead, and he was at the gates of hell.
Thinking of this, he realized he really wanted to live. Crispin found himself at a crossroads, literally, and asked God which path to take. He took the one that had misty sunlight on it, [00:03:00] which went west. That's the end of chapter 14.
Now we move on to chapter 15. Crispin walked all day. He saw no one else. He found water, but no food.
The afternoon of the following day, he came to a small village. There were no people or animals anywhere though. And as he got into the village, he realized that at lay in ruin: roofs collapsed carts broken, walls fallen. Then Crispin realized it must have been destroyed by the plague.
Mustering up his courage, Crispin entered a cottage in search of food. What he saw was a skeleton and all his courage left him. He ran almost out of the village, but then he heard a voice singing. That is the end of chapter 15.
Now we move on to chapter 16. The voice startled Crispin, so he stopped. He realized the voice came from the church.
Crispin [00:04:00] grasped his cross and went closer. Then he heard a drum along with the singing. He peeked in and saw a man that looked the opposite of a skeleton. He was large with thick arms and legs and a big belly.
He had a hat that had a point, but it was actually split into two points, and each point had a bell on the end. It had flaps that went down the sides of his face and tied below his chin. He had a big bushy red beard, bushy red eyebrows, and a big nose. He had on a black tunic and pants with one leg red and one leg blue. Then he also had on long leather boots with pointy tips.
It sounds like he looked like a court jester to me, but it doesn't technically mention that in the book.
He also had a dagger at his side and a bag on the floor. His eyes were closed as he sang and beat his drum. When he opened them, [00:05:00] he asked Crispin where he was from. Crispin pointed to where he came from. When the big man asked where Crispin was going, he said to meet his father. After more questions that were difficult for Crispin to answer confidently, the man asked if he was hungry.
When Crispin said he was, the man went on and on about the king's officials being gluttons and prospering off the peasant folk, but the king must be fine with that. He asked Crispin what he thought of his sermon. Crispin made the mistake of saying it sounded treasonous. The big man's face showed anger. He said he hated all tyranny and asked Crispin if that sounded treasonous. Crispin didn't say anything this time.
The man asked if he was hungry, and he brought out a big lump of bread from his sack. As Crispin reached for it, the man grabbed Crispin by the wrist. That is the end of chapter 16.
Now we are [00:06:00] moving on to chapter 17. And yes, you heard me say twice that he asked Crispin if he was hungry and he did ask twice in chapter 16 if he was hungry.
Crispin cried for him to let him go and that he only wanted bread. The man said, bread is never free. The man told Crispin, he could tell that he was running away from his lawful place and to tell him where it was.
Crispin told him he was going to town to save himself. The man pushed further and Crispin told him he was declared a wolf's head. The man pressed more as to why. Crispin told him he was accused of theft by the steward of his area, but he didn't steal anything. The man asked about his father and mother, and Crispin told him they were both dead.
The man dropped his grip on Crispin's wrist, but quickly moved between Crispin and the doorway. That's the end of chapter 17.
Now we're on to chapter 18. The man told Crispin he was now his lord. He told him that by [00:07:00] Crispin leaving his master, he became the servant of the first person who found him.
Then the man asked if Crispin saw the man hanging in the gallows and read the note on his chest. Crispin said he couldn't read. So the man told him, it said he was hanging because he rose up against his master by holding back some wool so he could sell it to feed his sickly child, and that was considered theft.
Then the man made Crispin swear on Jesus' name that he would not leave his side and Crispin did swear. All right, that is the end of chapter 18. Like I said, this is gonna be a very short one. Hopefully I can knock more of these out quickly and you can get your recap in. And that is it for now. Until later.
