Now let's move on into the content.
Welcome back. We are continuing on with Crispin, the Cross of Lead. Trying to get these recap episodes out to you faster, so they are going to be shorter to do that. Today we are going through chapter seven through 12. Let's dive in, shall we?
Asta's son is hiding in the forest. The searchers came close a couple of times. At one point while hiding under some leaves, he overheard two men talking. Asta's son was accused of some type of lunacy over his mother's death, which caused him to break into the manor house and steal money.
Both men said they don't believe it, but the steward says it's so and that's the end of it.
Then the two men spoke of the horrible things the steward had done in the name of Lord Furnival. They prayed for Lord Furnival's [00:02:00] return and then they moved on. After hearing this Asta's son was so worried he didn't move until after dark. After the curfew bell rang and it was intensely dark was when he finally dared to move toward the church.
And realize we are still calling him Asta's son because we do not know his actual name yet in the book. Obviously we do, 'cause it's the title of the book.
Anyway, that was the end of chapter seven.
Let's continue on with chapter eight.
This one's a little bit longer as far as the book goes 'cause the chapters are pretty short.
Father Quinel lived in an attached room behind the church. He was old and wisened. There was a rumor that he was an unwanted son of the previous Lord Furnival. He was provided the church living when he was just a boy. Father Quinel answered the door and was happy to see Asta's son. He let him inside the church and told him to claim sanctuary if anyone came. The church is then [00:03:00] described.
It looks like what we would think of as a small village Catholic type church. Even though this was back before there was the divide, so it was just the church. Then Father Quinel gave him some barley bread. Father Quinel and Asta's son talk about the accusations and what Asta's son did, saw and heard in the forest.
Then Father Quinel told Asta's son that Aycliffe declared him a wolf's head, which means he is considered not human and anyone can kill him. Then father told him he had to leave, but Asta's son said he wouldn't be able to get permission to go. Then Father Quinel asked him if he knew his own name. He did not.
The father told him when he was baptized in secret with the name Crispin, but no one was to know that. That was why his mother only called him son. Then Father Quinel told him to leave and go find a city. If he could stay [00:04:00] for a year and a day, he could be free. Crispin asked Father Quinel if God was angry with him or his mother.
Father Quinel said it was not for him to know how God felt, but he did know that Crispin must leave. Father Quinel told him to hide in the forest. One more day, come back tomorrow night to Goodwife Peregrine's house. Father Quinel will find some food and things to protect Crispin along the way. He would also tell him about his father then.
The father handed Crispin, the lead cross that belonged to Crispin's mother. He also informed Crispin that his mother could read and write and wrote words on the cross. Come back tomorrow night and he would tell him all about it. But for now, he had to go hide again. All right. That's the end of chapter eight.
We are now going on to chapter nine. In the morning, Crispin went back to the big rock to look around. He did not see a hunting party. He searched for food and prayed for guidance and tried [00:05:00] out his new name. Well, not a new name, but tried out his name. It still felt weird to him. He thought about what the priest was going to tell him about his father.
He also kept thinking about what the priest had told him about his mother. Crispin waited until dark to go back down. When he got close to the church, a boy named Cedric addressed him. Cedric told Crispin that Father Quinel had sent him because he could not meet Crispin. Crispin was to follow Cedric.
Cedric told Crispin that he was to go along the road that leads West. When Crispin asked why they weren't going to Goodwife Peregrine's house, Cedric insisted that Father Quinel couldn't meet him. Crispin insisted on going to Goodwife Peregrine's house, so Cedric followed him. Goodwife Peregrine was the oldest person in Stromford and had special wisdom for healing. Crispin felt fear and fascination about her.
When they got to her house, Crispin told her that it was Asta's son. She asked if [00:06:00] it was Father Quinel with him, but he said it was Cedric. When she asked where the priest was and Cedric said he couldn't come. She asked why. When Cedric said he didn't know, she knew something was up.
She said Crispin had to leave. There was 20 shillings offered as a reward for him. That was half a year's wages for somebody that lived in that town. Cedric said the steward planned to look north. So Goodwife Peregrine said Crispin should go south. She put a leather pouch around Crispin's neck and told him to eat some porridge she had made before he went.
He put his cross in the pouch and ate the porridge. Then she gave him some bread to take with him. Then she pushed him out the door saying, God be with you Asta's son. That is the end of chapter nine.
Now we are moving on to chapter 10. As soon as they got outside, Cedric told Crispin not to go south because the steward said he was looking north.
So it was probably a trick to get him to go south. He told him to go west, which would take [00:07:00] him by the manor house, the last place anyone would think he would go, but Crispin wanted to go to the church first to see if Father Quinel was there, but no one was there. Then Cedric said maybe Father Quinel was on the other side of the river west.
So Crispin went. After a bit, Crispin looked back and saw Cedric slowly backing away. Then when he was gone and four armed men with glaives and swords came in to block his way. As he turned back around, four more men blocked his way that way. It was a trap. And that's the end of chapter 10.
Now we move on to chapter 11.
Aycliffe yelled, Asta's son and yelled that he was a wolf's head, and for someone to slay him. Crispin ran the only way he could see, which was toward the mill. He tried to climb up, but an arrow was shot and embedded in the timbers next to him. Then he dropped down and scrambled around the corner. The other side of the mill was completely dark.
[00:08:00] Crispin fell into the water. Then Crispin landed in the mill race, which is where the water ran to turn the mill's wheels. It was only chest deep, so Crispin followed the mill race path, which led him to the river. Crispin was afraid of the river because he couldn't swim. When he saw the torches up ahead, he decided to cut back to go past the cottages and fields to the southern end of Stromford.
When he came to the boundary cross, he knelt down to pray. He realized someone was lying there. He also realized it was Father Quinel. He called his name softly and went to touch him. Then he saw his throat was slit. Crispin was terrified. He said a short prayer to St. Giles and ran away. He was certain God had abandoned him.
That is the end of chapter 11.
Now we are moving on to chapter 12. Sometimes Crispin ran, sometimes he walked. All of the time he cried with grief. He knew Father [00:09:00] Quinel's death had something to do with him and his mother. Was it because he was helping Crispin? Was it because he was going to tell Crispin about his father?
After he'd gone down the road or path a ways, he realized he had lost the bag of food that Goodwife Peregrine had given him. He couldn't go back for it. He would have to forage. He did still have the leather pouch around his neck with his cross. The path led into a forest. So Crispin sat by a tree, exhausted.
Crispin couldn't sleep, so he got down on his knees and prayed to Jesus, to Mary, and to St. Giles for mercy guidance and protection. Putting himself in God's hands brought him a little relief, enough to fall asleep. That is the end of today's episode, so is short but sweet and I will hopefully have the next episode up pretty quickly.
Until then.
