007 The Secret Garden Chapters 26-27 Summary, Issues and ANI
[00:00:00] Where you tend a rose, my lad, a thistle cannot grow. This is really the theme of The Secret Garden. We've seen it with the garden itself, we've seen it with Mary and with Colin, and now...
[00:00:13] The Secret Garden is the Classical Conversations Challenge A novel we will be summarizing . Today we are summarizing chapters 26 and 27.
[00:00:23] And at the end of this, we will also be going over issue ideas and ANI chart ideas. If you are using the Lost Tools of Wrtiting curriculum, this is how you would start your persuasive essay is coming up with issue ideas and then any chart ideas. And it's one of those things that's helpful if somebody gives you some ideas to start with.
[00:00:45] You can find links to chapters 1 through 25 summarized in the description, but first welcome to Camp Hain the adventures of a Catholic family that homeschools, public schools, online schools, and has one super obsessed with baseball kid. [00:01:00] Currently I, Tia Hain, am a Classical Conversations Challenge A director.
[00:01:04] A lot of this podcast channel is related to that. For now. But I also post videos about math, mostly algebra, since I tutor and our life. We love our adventures so come along for the ride and click the subscribe button if you are a homeschooler or are thinking about homeschooling or even if this content just interests you.
[00:01:24] There I've said the things, now let's move on into the content. Like I said, today I'm summarizing The Secret Garden chapters 26 and 27. It is the end of the book. I am not reading the book at all. You can go to Internet Grandpa on YouTube for that. I will put links in the description. He reads the whole book.
[00:01:43] At the end of this episode, we will be getting into some issue ideas and ANI chart ideas for doing the Lost Tools of Wrtiting curriculum. Like I said before.
[00:01:52] Let's start with chapter 26. It is called It's Mother. Now, they, Colin, Dickon, Mary, [00:02:00] and Ben, started the morning in the garden like most mornings. They were weeding, and Colin was giving a lecture about magic again. Then Colin stood up and told Mary and Dickon to look at him and remember when he had first come into the garden and now look at him.
[00:02:14] He was well. He got very excited and said he was so thankful he wanted to shout something. Ben Weatherstaff mentioned something about the doxology. When Colin asked what that was, Ben said Dickon could sing it for him. Dickon said they had to stand up and take off their caps and then he would sing it.
[00:02:35] And it goes, Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him all creatures here below. Praise him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
[00:02:48] Now, if you want to hear it sung, there are plenty of YouTube videos. Just search for doxology.
[00:02:54] Colin liked the song and thought it meant the same thing as how he wants to [00:03:00] shout out that he's thankful to the magic.
[00:03:02] Then Ben said that he had never seen no sense in the doxology before, but he thinks he's changed his mind. Then the garden door started to open and they all got a bit nervous until they realized it was Mother, Mrs Sowerby. Mother got such joy out of seeing Colin and Mary for the first time and seeing how healthy they looked.
[00:03:24] Colin and Mary were glad to finally meet her too. Mother commented about how much Colin reminded her of his mother. She went around the garden and they told her all the stories of the garden. She had packed the usual basket that Dickon had brought earlier with all the food in it, and then they brought it out and enjoyed the food.
[00:03:43] Mrs Sowerby talked Yorkshire to them and taught them some new words. They made plans for when the children would go visit the cottage. And then it was time to head back into the house.
[00:03:54] Now we're on the last chapter, chapter 27, called In the Garden. [00:04:00] It's a bit of a long one, but we'll get through it.
[00:04:02] When you tend to rose, my lad, a thistle cannot grow. This is really the theme of The Secret Garden. We have seen it with the garden itself. We have seen it with Mary and Colin and now we get to see it with Mr Craven, Colin's father. Mr Craven is currently in Switzerland, or at least this chapter goes over a period of time you realize as you're reading it. But at the beginning of this chapter, he is in Switzerland.
[00:04:26] For the last 10 years, he's been in a very dark place. He has been in beautiful places, outwardly beautiful by lakes on mountainsides, but he couldn't see any of the beauty. One day he was sitting by a stream and he saw some beautiful blue flowers.
[00:04:42] He actually started thinking about how lovely it was and wondered about the blueness of its blossoms. This was the beginning of him coming out of his dark place very slowly. The book tells us that at the same time back at Missalthwaite Manor is when [00:05:00] Colin was shouting he was going to live forever and ever and ever.
[00:05:04] Over the next couple of months, the happier beautiful thoughts were slowly crowding out the dark thoughts. Then one night he dreamed of his wife and he was reaching for her asking where she was and she was calling to him saying she was in the garden. In the garden. The next morning he received a letter from Susan Sowerby saying that he needed to come home as soon as possible.
[00:05:28] In a few days, he was back at home. When he saw Mrs Medlock, he asked where Colin was. She filled him in on all the happenings from her point of view, including him going out to the garden from morning until night with Dickon and Mary. Remember, she doesn't know this is The Secret Garden, but he's going out to the garden area.
[00:05:47] He sent Mrs Medlock away and they kept repeating to himself in the garden, in the garden. So he decided he had to go to the garden even though it had been locked up for 10 years and the key had been buried.
[00:05:59] So [00:06:00] there's the general garden area of like the grounds and then there's The Secret Garden, the special garden that was his wife's garden.
[00:06:06] He knows that he's supposed to be looking for his wife's garden at this point, but to him, it's been locked up for 10 years.
[00:06:14] When he got to where the door was, all of a sudden the door opened a bit and a boy came running out at him. Dickon, Mary and Colin had been running a race around the garden and Colin had won and as he came tumbling through the door into his father's arms he was winning the race.
[00:06:30] Mr Craven was overcome with joy to see Colin so healthy and he told him to take him into the garden and tell him all about it. Colin told them everything about how they brought the garden back to life and how the garden brought him back to life and how he was now an athlete and a lecturer and a scientific discoverer. And the best part was now the garden didn't have to be a secret anymore.
[00:06:55] The very last page of the book, Ben Weatherstaff is in the servants quarters waiting to [00:07:00] see everyone's reaction as Mr Craven and Colin come walking back from the garden. And that is the end of our book.
[00:07:10] Now, for those that are doing the Lost Tools of Wrtiting or are possibly interested in checking out the Lost Tools of Wrtiting curriculum or even just how it works a little bit, I'm now going to go over some issue ideas that my class and I came up with, and then I will go over some ANI chart ideas.
[00:07:26] First, some issue ideas. We have whether Mr Craven should have taken Mary Lennox in. Whether Mr Craven should have shut up the garden. Whether Mary should have ventured through the mansion. Whether Mary should have searched for the door to The Secret Garden. Whether Mary should have searched for the crying.
[00:07:48] Whether Dickon should have come to help in the garden. Whether Mary should have told Colin about the garden. Whether Mary should have helped Colin get better. Whether Dickon should have [00:08:00] helped Mary. Whether Dickon should have kept the garden a secret. And whether Dickon should have gone to meet Colin.
[00:08:08] Now my class and I, we decided to use the issue whether Mary should have ventured through the mansion. I will give you my list of affirmative, negative, and interesting ideas for this. If you don't know what an ANI chart is, ANI, A N I, stands for affirmative, negative, and interesting, and you create columns based on this issue.
[00:08:30] The issue we chose was whether Mary should have ventured through the mansion. If we want to affirm that issue, if we want to say, yes, Mary should have ventured through the mansion, we come up with a list of ideas that support why she should have ventured through the mansion.
[00:08:47] Now, if we want to take the negative, if we want to say, Mary should NOT have ventured through the mansion, then you come up with a list of negative ideas that is support for her not having gone through the [00:09:00] mansion. Then you come up with just interesting ideas, which are just random things that are important to the topic, but aren't really an affirmative or a negative for this particular issue. But they might be good to know because we might use them somewhere in our writing.
[00:09:19] First I will go over some affirmative ideas. I have:
[00:09:23] Mary found Colin. Colin got better. Ben got to go into the garden again. Dr Craven was happy to see Colin better. Mary got to see the beauty of the house. Colin liked his mother more. Colin was nicer. Mrs Sowerby got to care for Mary and Colin. Mary got nicer.
[00:09:44] Ben got nicer. The servants got to relax a bit. Mary got to play with the ivory figures.
[00:09:51] Mr Craven got to see his son healthy. Mr Craven and Colin got to build a relationship. Mary got to know her [00:10:00] cousin.
[00:10:00] Mary and Colin had each other to relate to. Mary found a library. Colin found out about the garden. Colin wanted to see the garden. Colin met Dickon. Colin made friends. Colin got to hold animals. Mary got to see neat furniture and tapestries. Mary got to see a family of mice. Dickon got to see inside the house.
[00:10:26] Mary satisfied her curiosity about the crying. Colin got to go outside. Mary sees the painting of Colin's mother, her aunt. Mary finds out more about her aunt. And it cured Mary's boredom. All these things can be used as proof to affirm the positive of Mary should have explored the mansion.
[00:10:53] Now, some things for Mary should not have explored the mansion. It was dangerous. [00:11:00] Mrs Medlock got mad. Colin could have gotten mad. Mary could have gotten lost. There could have been guard dogs. Mary got yelled at. Mary lied to Colin at first. Mr Craven could get mad. Mr Craven could take away Mary's ability to be in the garden.
[00:11:17] Mary could have ruined the ivory pieces. Mary could have ruined the books. Colin could have gotten hurt. Mary could have ruined the furniture and tapestries. Martha gets freaked out. The cook has to make more food. And the children keeping secrets. Those are all the things that are negative that happen from her exploring the mansion.
[00:11:43] Now just some random interesting things that might be used later in your paper. Mary met Dickon. The garden belongs to Colin's mother. Mary is a girl. Mary is an orphan. Mary is part of the Lennox family. Mary is part of the Craven family. Mary is [00:12:00] spoiled. Mary is English. Mary grew up in India.
[00:12:03] Mary is an only child. Mary is not poor. Mary lives in a large manor. Colin is a boy. Colin is disabled. Colin has weak legs. Colin's mother is dead. Colin's mother died in childbirth. Colin is spoiled. Colin thinks he will die an early death. Mr Craven is rarely home. Mr Craven is heartbroken. The weather is stormy when Mary goes searching.
[00:12:28] Those are just some random ideas. For those not doing Lost Tales of Writing, hopefully that makes sense. If you stayed to the end of this, I am very impressed, but like I said, it just means the affirmative is these are the positive things that happened because Mary went exploring the mansion because in the book she actually does go exploring the mansion, but the negative are the negative things that happened or could happen because she went exploring the mansion.
[00:12:56] That makes our decision on whether or not she should or should not [00:13:00] have done the things that she did.
[00:13:02] That is the end of this episode. If you liked it, give it a thumbs up, let the algorithm work and I can make more and subscribe or follow if this channel appeals to you. Until next time...
